I won’t stop until I’ve completely disappeared

Performance 2017, ZAT Festival, Parc Montcalm, Montpellier (FR)

What do we expect from a performance? Spectacle, grandeur, mastery? In this case, this is an anti-performance: there is no spectacle but labour, no grandeur but depth, no mastery but learning…

I invite the spectators to follow me in my efforts to contemplate disappearance — our own, and that of the earth and its resources. Over the two days of the festival, I dug a hole in full view of the audience, until it was large enough for me to disappear into. At regular intervals, I would stop to document the progression of my disappearance, using a typewriter and a Polaroid camera. Throughout the festival, the audience could follow the process: changes in the state of the landscape, changes in my physical condition, the development of my ability to use the tools, and fluctuations in my emotions and level of fatigue.
